Outline

We're going to do an initial run of keycaps. 3 designs. 50 of each.

50x PostHog colour logo on a white key
50x PostHog white logo on a black key
50x Max the Hedgehog

Images need to be provided square, with the appropriate white space you want around them. The logos are straightforward, but in terms of the Max image we can have free reign. Some ideas:

  • Max holding a sign that says 'ESCAPE' (to go on an escape key)
  • Max laying down, as a neutral option

We also need to decide if we want Max on a black, coloured, or white background.

We had an initial sample printed, as reference.

Deadline & Priority

Would love to get this done in the new year.

Couldn't decide what to go on the hedgehog key so thought I'd open it to the group

keycap designs

Hi @lottiecoxon! So lovely and fun.

What keys do we anticipate these capping?

  • I observe that the 'esc' key on many keyboards, even between different editions of Macbooks, are different shapes from each other, and also different shapes from the other more-uniform single-character alphabet keys.
  • I observe that Function, Control and Option are the ones that might make most sense for design for: they have a uniform design, and are multi-purpose and re-assignable.

If we did focus on function, control, option:

  • The hedgehogs could be holding signs that say each of those words
  • For function, it could be holding a Globe icon. Or standing in between the letters F and N trying to put the FUN in Function.
  • For control, it could be wearing a ^ on its head. Or trying to control something (remote control? complicated computer?)
  • The logo makes sense too!

Also, for the one that says "tap this" — I'm not sure if this is shared cultural slang, so I'll spell it out and risk feeling silly. If one were to hang out somewhere in North America in the early 2000s and hear a person make a misogynistic comment about someone they found attractive, they might say "I'd tap that." So, the sign that says "tap this" ends up sounding somewhat provocative and harassment. Maybe that's intentional!

Love the logo keycaps. It would be neat if the black could shine through for backlit keyboards; not sure if your vendor offers such a process though, I found it hard to source.

The thing about the person who purchases a custom keycap: they're already deep in keyboard customization, so in many cases the conventional keyboard modifiers have been folded into custom macros, or incorporated into layers.

So instead of labels that map 1:1 to standard keys, I'd advocate for representing ideas on the caps, as these can map to keys or to macros.

For example:

The idea here is "burn."

This is an amazing delete key. It's also a perfect invocation for a macro that open the process monitor, because you have to nuke a runaway CPU gobbler that's torching your system.

If I had to pick one from this lineup, it's absolutely Hog on Fire.

On a similar note, anything where Max holds a tool, especially a hammer or a nuclear warhead, would be fun.

My brain is representing the above hedgehog and it's only Jan 7th lol- for ease of task completion and the fact that it's the first go I think we will go with the fire hog for this first run (then we can look into doing more) - thank you for everyones input !!

Seeing as the key's are 3D I have made full key covers as well as smaller top key designs - will message goblin techkeys back to ask how best they would like these files.
Looks like this below:
