They have no description of severity, or timestamps, or anything else useful right now.

This might be is the fault of the Google logger, should figure out how to change that

NB: These do show up more usefully in Stackdriver, so to fix this would mean changing the local (console) logging only

It appears, after this change, that now Stackdriver is just showing the raw CLI log format, and not annotating log levels in the UI.
