There is ongoing work to support mounting overlayfs upper/lower dirs by fds:

We could use these for the erofs mountpoint I think, to avoid having to use a temporary mountpoint directory for it.

...now if we could only get this for erofs... (although it's not like the /proc/self/fd/... hacks hurt there too much)...
