Custom Overlay #9280

Description

While iD provides the option to add a custom background, it's not currently possible to add a custom transparent overlay.

Ideally, there should be:

  1. a "Custom" item in the Overlays section as designed below:

image

  1. A similar configuration popup would open:

  1. an optional URL parameter that can receive overlay input e.g.

https://www.openstreetmap.org/id#overlay:custom=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Happy to help implement this if you don't see any concerns with the feature.

Here is the link I believe: facebook/Rapid#545

I am not familiar with Rapid history, so out of curiosity, why Facebook didn't offer a chrome extension instead of forking iD and duplicating codebases?

I recall Strava building their own iD fork with their great "slide" tool to only give up support a few years later...

This seems to be a duplicate of #3773? Strava is specifically tracked in #9129.

I second this. Was testing a transparent WMS recently and discovered iD doesn't support custom overlays.
